Reno Open Underway By InsidePOOL Staff The biannual Reno Open, sponsored by and held at the Sands Regency in Reno, NV, kicked off on Wednesday, December 10, 2003, with a grand total of 236 players. Some of the best players made it to the West Coast for this excellent event, held every December and June for the past 19 years, and it is impossible to predict a winner.
Past winner Rodney Morris, Ismael “Morro” Paez, Ernesto Dominguez, Cliff Joyner, John Horsfall, Joey Korsiak, U.S. Open champion Jeremy Jones, Buddy Hall, Santos Sambajon, Jose Parica, and Paul Potier are just a sampling of the talent in this exceptionally strong field. Scott “The Freezer” Frost, currently residing in Phoenix, AZ, made it out to Reno and defeated Corey Deuel 9-6 in the winners’ bracket Wednesday evening. He goes on to play Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer on Thursday at 9 p.m.
Danny Kuykendall, who owns Danny K’s in Orange, CA, won his first three matches but lost his fourth on Thursday night to Louis Ulrich 9-3. Ulrich upset Gabe Owen, who just won the Corpus Christi Classic in October, by the score of 9-6 on Wednesday evening. Another upset was the match on Wednesday evening between Ian Costello and Ralf Souquet where Costello defeated Souquet by the score of 9-6, in which Souquet said, “I just played terrible.” Ronnie “Everything’s Funny When You’re Winning Big Money” Wiseman is tearing through the winners’ bracket, along with Max Eberle, Mike Davis, Jeremy Jones, and defending champion John Schmidt.
