Hard Times Summer Jamboree One-Pocket Event By Jamie Gonzales, InsidePOOL Staff May 26th saw the second day of the one-pocket event of the 5th Annual Summer Jamboree at Hard Times Billiards of Sacramento, CA. The tournament room in back was filled with intensity. A few whispers could be heard among the clicking of billiards.
The third round of the winners’ brackets was the first of the games played on Wednesday. One table that had many onlookers was the match between past Reno Open champ John Schmidt and custom cue maker Bobby Hunter. Schmidt was a student of Hunter’s for 8 years. But on Wednesday the teacher defeated the former student, dealing Schmidt his first loss of the tournament.
For Schmidt the night was not a big loss. After his match with Hunter, he went on to win in the fourth round over Tony Nelson. The next round Schmidt found himself again winning in his match against Ronnie Allen. A table that always found spectators was the match between San Franciscan Billy Palmer and 2002 World Artistic Pool champion Mike Massey. Massey received his first loss in the event, but he came back to beat legendary Lou Butera in the fourth round of the one-loss bracket and Roger Estelle in the fifth round. Palmer went on to defeat Joey Gebron in the fourth round. Finally, one other player that caught some peoples’ eyes was 2003 Legends of one-Pocket champion Scott “The Freezer” Frost. He defeated Ed Ames in the third round and Hunter in the fourth round. There’s no Magic 8 ball that could reveal who is going to win the one-pocket event of the Summer Jamboree. But spectators won’t be disappointed on Thursday when these players compete for first place. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
