Two Repeat Performances on Tiger Planet Pool Tour

Two Repeat Performances on Tiger Planet Pool Tour

Repeating his performance from the month before, Shawn Putnam stormed through a field of 47 players on the Tiger Planet Pool Tour and came through without a scratch on him to win the tournament.  In addition to his back-to-back tour wins, Putnam also captured the first two UPA stops in a row earlier this year.

Held at First Break Café in Sterling, VA, over the weekend of June 4-5, this event had an all-star Northeast cast that included former Reno Open champion Mike Davis, “Earthquake” Keith McCready, and Ryan “Genie Man” McCreesh.  It was McCreesh whom Putnam met in the hot seat match, defeating his opponent 9-5 and sending him to the one-loss side to do battle with Davis.  After ousting McCready, Davis met McCreesh in the semifinals, and David emerged to advance with a 7-2 win.  The undefeated Putnam awaited him in the final match, and although Davis put up a valiant effort, it wasn’t quite enough, for Putnam took the win by the close score of 11-9.

Sixteen talented ladies showed up to do battle in the women’s division, with the 17-year-old Pamela Treadway taking her fourth Tiger Planet Pool Tour title.  Not only was it her fourth win, she also holds a 100% match record, having never been defeated on the tour.

Wendy Safford had her personal best finish on the tour when she took fourth place after being ousted by Tina Meraglio.  Coming through the one-loss side, Meraglio had suffered a first-round defeat to My-Hanh Lac 7-5 and was looking for revenge in the semifinals but didn’t find it.  After being bested in the hot seat match 7-1 by Treadway, Lac was on a mission, and she swept through the semifinal match 5-2.  However, she didn’t have enough momentum to go through Treadway, who took home the title with a 9-4 victory.

Results:
1st Shawn Putnam
2nd Mike Davis
3rd Ryan McCreesh
4th Keith McCready
5th Todd Elkins, Mike Champagne
7th John Newton, Johnny Cisneros
9th Kevin West, Walter Koch, Brandon Shuff, Alvin Thomas

Ladies’ Results:
1st Pamela Treadway
2nd My-Hanh Lac
3rd Tina Meraglio
4th Wendy Safford

Alcano Tops Manila Leg, Earns World Pool Ticket

Alcano Tops Manila Leg, Earns World Pool Ticket

Ronato “Ronnie” Alcano of the Philippines avenged his countrymen’s earlier setbacks as he defeated Yang Ching-Shun of Chinese Taipei 11-6, to claim the fourth and final leg of the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour at the Robinsons Galleria Trade Hall late Sunday evening.

Not willing to suffer the same fate as Efren “Bata” Reyes and Gandy Valle against Yang, Alcano capitalized on two crucial scratches committed by his Taiwanese foe late in the match and eventually broke free from the tightly contested encounter to snag the crown in front of a highly appreciative hometown crowd.

Yang, who edged Reyes 9-8 in the quarterfinals and defeated Valle 11-7 in the semifinals, couldn’t beat a third Filipino this time around.

Yang Prevents All-Filipino Semifinals, Boots out Reyes
Sunday, June 05, 2005 - 10:14 AM EST

Yang Prevents All-Filipino Semifinals, Boots out Reyes

valle1_san_miguel.jpgYang Ching Shun of Chinese Taipei played the spoiler’s role as he edged out hometown favorite Efren “Bata” Reyes of the Philippines 9-8 to prevent an all-Filipino cast in the semifinals during the final leg of the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour at the hot and humid Robinsons Galleria Trade Hall.

Playing inside the venue without air-conditioning because of a power trip, Yang displayed enough coolness under pressure as he stormed back from a 5-7 deficit to beat his Filipino rival and in the process clinched the overall Tour title. The Taiwanese will have at least 200 Tour points after making it to the semifinals for the fourth straight time this year.  Reyes, as a result of his quarterfinal loss, will only get 150 points, while fellow Filipino Gandy Valle, who made it to the semifinals, can reach at most 170 points if he wins the Manila leg.
